How to Keep Your Mass Spectrometer Alive:
A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Complete Idiot
Much like the evolution of the Volkswagen from its humble beginnings as a basic air-cooled automobile, the last 25 years have seen tremendous advances in ion trap mass spectrometry that have transformed the simple chromatographic detector into a high performance tool for proteomics. Many thousands of talented people have contributed to these developments, and the study of ion traps has provided fertile ground for analytical chemists to innovate and advance many areas of research. This is particularly true for the field of proteomics, where the analysis of ion trap mass spectrometry data is revolutionizing biological research and advancing our understanding of disease. This lecture will combine schematic illustrations, analogies, and a touch of philosophy, to highlight how ion traps and new methods of operation now allow us to more fully characterize and quantify complex biological system.
